When the soft tissue inside a tooth (the pulp) becomes infected or inflamed — usually from deep decay, a crack, or repeated dental work — root canal treatment removes that infected tissue, cleans and shapes the empty canals, then seals them so the tooth can stay in your mouth instead of being extracted. Most teeth have 1–4 canals depending on which tooth it is (front teeth usually have 1, molars often have 3–4), which is why pricing for general-dentist treatment is quoted per canal rather than a flat per-tooth fee.
We offer root canal treatment at two levels, so you can choose what fits your case and budget. Your dentist will tell you honestly which one your tooth needs — straightforward cases don't need to pay specialist rates, and genuinely complex cases (re-treatment, unusual canal anatomy, calcified canals) are better handled by an endodontist.
A single-rooted front tooth (1 canal) typically costs RM799–899 in total; a molar with 3–4 canals costs proportionally more — your dentist gives you the exact total after an X-ray.
A flat per-tooth fee covering specialist-level complexity — re-treatment of a previously root-canal-ed tooth, curved or calcified canals, or cases referred by another dentist.

We take an X-ray to see how many canals your tooth has and how infected it is, then tell you honestly whether general-dentist or specialist treatment fits.
Under local anaesthesia, the infected pulp is removed and each canal is cleaned, shaped and disinfected. Usually 1–2 visits depending on complexity.
The cleaned canals are sealed, and a root-canal-treated tooth (especially a molar) usually needs a crown afterward to protect it from cracking.

The procedure itself is done under local anaesthesia, so you shouldn't feel pain during treatment — most patients describe it as similar to getting a filling. Some mild soreness for a day or two afterward is normal.
Pricing under our general dentists is per canal, not per tooth. A front tooth usually has 1 canal; a molar often has 3–4. More canals means more cleaning and sealing, so the total cost is higher.
If it's a re-treatment of a tooth that already had root canal treatment, the canals are unusually curved or calcified, or a general dentist refers you after an attempt — those go to Dr Athena, our endodontist. Most first-time, straightforward cases are handled by our general dentists.
Usually 1–2 visits for general-dentist cases, depending on how infected the tooth is. Specialist cases with Dr Athena may also take 1–2 visits depending on complexity.
For back teeth (molars and premolars) that do most of the chewing, yes — a crown is strongly recommended afterward to stop the tooth cracking, since root-canal-treated teeth become more brittle.
An infected tooth left untreated can develop a painful abscess, spread infection to surrounding bone, and eventually need to be extracted instead of saved.

Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until it's fully restored with a filling or crown.
Mild soreness for 1–2 days is normal — over-the-counter pain relief usually helps.
Keep up your usual brushing and flossing — the rest of the tooth still needs care.
Come back for your crown or permanent filling as scheduled — delaying it risks the tooth cracking.
